Story by
Jim Grant
As warm temperatures in the high desert start to
diminish
flattrack racing is at full swing at the Wheel 2 Wheel Speedway in
Victorville
California. With round one of the Winter Series beginning, Joe Steffen
let it be known he'd be a very strong contender in the series this
winter.
With a crowd of over two hundred fired up fans you could feel the
excitement
that was about to begin. In the newly designed structure format the Mad
Dog class would be the first main event of the night. With the mixture
of old and new bikes with CCs from 100cc to 151ccs Kurt Spiers on a
thirty
year old Yamaha 125 got a great holeshot to run them into turn one with
xr120 mounted Kenny Hunter hot on his rear tire, it looked as though
Kenny
had all the corner speed in the world to to make the pass but when Kurt
hit the straight he left Kenny in the dust. Scott Thurlow held down the
number three spot to the finish. Next up the Lightweight Class with CCs
ranging from 151 to 399cc found Lancaster Californias own Tom Horton on
his pristene Bultaco Astro blast off the line with Joe Steffen and John
Lindsey in pursuit, after 4 laps its still Tom Horton, Joe Steffen, and
John Lindsey, going into turn one Tom Hortons bultaco seized and move
Joe
Steffen into the number one spot for the remainder of the race, moving
Tim Henry into the number three spot until John Lindseys Yamaha
transmission
broke. I'd also like to mention Tim Henry is on aboard Wayne Raineys
old
Shell Yamaha 250 and it's a rocket. At the checkers its Steffen and Tim
Henry. Up next is the middleweight class with CCs from 400 to 599. Jim
Rosa on his newly redone Honda cr450f, I spoke with Jim and
he said its handling better than it ever but its still taking some time
to getting use to. As the green flag dropped Rosa led Ian Foulds,
Joe Steffen, Tom Horton, Tom Sahli, and Ray Hensley into turn one. Then
after a bobble by Foulds Joe Steffen took over the number two spot with
Tom Horton looking to pounced on Foulds, Horton completing the pass on
Foulds for the number three spot. At the checkered flag its Jimmy Rosa,
Steffen, Horton, and Ian Foulds. Onto the Heavyweight main event
consisting
of any year bikes with a CCs displacment of 600 and larger. Southern
Ca.
fast guy Steve Fortune cut a perfect light to gain the advantage over
the
rest of the field and used that 665 Rotax power to put distance on
Royal
Adderson and 16 year old Jimmy Wood. After 4 its Fortune, Adderson,
Wood,
Horton. Then Adderson coming off turn two clips the backstraight wall
and
gives room for Jimmy Wood to make the pass going into three. At the
charity
stripe its Steve Fortune, Jimmy Wood, and Tom Horton. In the Big Man
class
which is made up of riders over the age of 40 and over 200 pounds. Rod
Sexton made his return debut after a nasty crash a couple months ago at
a short track in Tulare Ca. Woodrotax Racings Elliott Iverson
beat
the entire field to the first turn with Rod Sexton making the pass down
the back straight and maintaining a marginal lead over Iverson
and
Ken Barrows to the checkers. There was a Open Pro Class generated by
the
riders themselves and came up with a total of $300.00 to be divided
among
the top 5 finishers with contributions from Eddie Mulder and track
owner
John Aden. As tonights fast guys took there positions in a 15 lap main
event, it was clear from the start Joe Steffen had one thing on his
mind
and that was to make this main event history, and he did just that by
getting
a great holeshot with John Lungren, Jimmy Rosa, Tom Horton, Ian Foulds
and JimmyWood behind. Wood driving that Suzuki in to the turns and
floating
that front wheel just like the big boys to a point where you think he's
gonna loose it. Wood making a dash for the front and picking guys off
lap
after lap. After 10 laps its Steffen, Wood, Lungren, as the laps wound
down Horton and Foulds battled hard for the fouth position with Horton
winning the battle. Open Pro winner Joe Steffen takes his victory lap
followed
by Jimmy Wood, John Lungren, Tom Horton and Ian Foulds.
The
Race
Program at Wheel to Wheel Speedway
is
established
for a spec mini sprint car.
"Speedway Sprints were designed for the dirt
track
racing enthusiast that wants a rush at an
affordable option to full size sprint cars. They are
based on a caged cart design incorporating a
500cc single cylinder Jawa motorcycle engine and
clutch
assembly, no transmission.
There is also a junior and intermediate version for
the younger racers incorporating a 5.5 hp Tecumseh
and 13 hp Tecumseh motor, both of which are based
on the same chassis as the adult version.
These cars can be upgraded as the racers skills are
improved."
