Story by Jim Grant 760 948-3669
Warm temperatures and blue
skies brought over 120 riders to the high desert for some handlebar to
handlebar banging action at the little short track in Victorville California.Event
promotor and Southern California Flattrack Racers Associations President
Bruce Sanford said he was more than happy with the turn out and hopes for
the remaining three winter series races to be as good as this one. After
a short riders meeting practice got underway and then on to the heats then
the mains. Up first was the youth class 50cc where Logan Myers held on
for the win over larry Smith and Andre Ochs. Micheal Fox won the 65cc class
over Joey St Lewis. In the 80cc Andy Wood had his brand new Jim Wood built
dtxed Honda CR blazing as he won the class easy over Devon Booher and Kyle
Logan. Once again Southern Californias little guy Andy Wood made all the
right moves to keep Kevin Knudson at bay to take yet another win in the
XR100 youth class. Kenny Hunter was all business when the mens XR100 class
lined up for there main event. Hunter had his hands full the entire race
as cousins Jimmy and Alex Wood tried all the tricks in the book to get
around Kenny but that big Honda horsepower kept him up front at the checkers
followed by Jimmy then Alex Wood. The novice 125 and 250 class where combined
and created some good racing with a couple of little guys on there 80s
showing they could beat those 250s and that they did, Devon Booher was
flying as he took the checkers followed by Andy Wood and first time ever
racing dirttrack Mark Seidfried on a Trackmaster Ossa 250. The next class
is filled with big time talent as Ian Faulds on his new bike led the pack
from the start and never looked back, followed by Frank Aragaki and Alex
Wood. Ex Ascot sensation and nice guy Greg Wilburn showed everyone the
fast way around the excellent John Aden prepaired little shorttrack
on his Larry Wilburn TT500 Yamaha beating John Lungren and Jim Ottele.
This next race is gonna be a good one with the Apple boys battling it out
on vintage bikes. Chris on his Triumph 500 tiger and brother Jeff on his
ex Cal Rayburn Harley Davidson 250 sprint. Chris got a great start and
held of brother Jeff for the win followed by long time racer Jim McMurren.
As the SR. class lined up you couldn't but notice the beautiful Rotax of
Dennis Volls. Richard Pollack on his newly built XR650 made it clear he
wasn't going to be denied the checkers in this one, Richard went on for
the win followed by Big D's Dennis Voll and Dennis Cameron. Greg
Wilburn on his 750 Triumph was once again the man of the hour as he and
Richard Pollack battled for the first three laps with Greg bringing home
the bacon followed by Pollack then Canadian transplanted Californian Royal
Adderson. The Super Srs are up next with long time racer Mickey Azola making
his racing return, in the first turn it was Marshall Jennings with the
lead as Azola wore him down Doug Douglas was making time on Jennings but
just wasn't enough at the end with Azola winning then Jennings and Douglas.
Its all about going fast as the open pros take there positions at the stripe.
This is gonna be a barn burner for sure. Jimmy Wood riding the bike Dan
Butler rode last year got the holeshot as they go into turn one with Jim
Rosa and Travis Petton side by side. Going down the backstraight Jim Rosa
lost his rear end and slammed into the wall causing himself and Petton
to go down with Petton getting the worst end of the deal. Travis was transported
for xrays and we where told later he hyper extended his leg. After
the restart Royal Adderson and Jimmy Wood jumped out front only to be challenged
by Richard Pollack and Jim Rosa. Jimmy Wood had that DR Suzuki blistering
around the tiny oval and checked out for the win, with Rosa getting by
Pollack for second. The open novice was a good one as Tom Sahli beat Don
Barmakian and ex sprint car racer Carl Shockley. Sportsman 750 class was
won by once again Greg Wilburn with Doug Douglas second. The last race
of the day found Ian Faulds on that new bike going just good enough after
a single row restart to take the win, with Alex Wood and Jeff Apple in
second and third. Next race will be Dec 16th.
