San Diego Flat Track
Association
hosted the forth annual Classic Bike Magazine National Short Track Race
at the beautiful Del Mar Fairgrounds. This event is held on the
Saturday
evening before the last Grand National race of the year, and is part of
a full day of motorcycle activities on the grounds. Two hundred and
thirty
entries filled the pits and required semi-mains in many classes.
Joe Steffen hole shotted
the first 10 lap main event which was for 250 Sportsman machines.
Second
row starter Ken Netto, was able work to second spot and challenge
Steffen's
Yamaha, but the Can-Am rider had to settle for second at the flag. The
250 Classic field was lead from flag to flag by Jeff Lessley on a
Bultaco.
Sprint mounted Jim McMurren passed Vince Graves at mid race and held on
to the flag for second place.
Sportsman 750 racers Sal
Peluso and Marty Lewis raced side by side from the green flag until
Lewis
dropped his Triumph in turn four. Ken Thiebaud dove inside Peluso in
turn
three on the forth lap for the lead. Rick Reed put Peluso down another
spot on lap eight, and John Proto dropped Peluso to forth on the ninth
go round. Finishing order was Thiebaud, Reed , Proto and Peluso.
Utah rider, Kit Farley, on his Sportsman 600 BSA, grabbed the start
over
Honda mounted Brad Spencer. Spencer owns this class on in the western
region,
and by the first time bye the line, was in the lead. Mark Aragon raced
in the third spot from the start, and Matt Rohr captured forth from the
second row.
The winner of the Classic 500/750
was settled in the first turn with Sepeda Adams riding the beautiful
Ariel
single into the lead. Murrel Barnett on the Velo and Dodge Brothers
Indian
mounted Rick Hocking went to war for second and third, swapping places
till the eight lap when they tangled on the back straight. Jeff Apple
watched
it all on his Sprint, and inherited second. Chris Rudy finished third
on
a borrowed Triumph twin. Ron Gould, on a BSA dominated the Super Senior
+60 class. Jim Connolly and Micky Alzola finished second and third.
Senior
+50's were lead by Triumph rider Wayne Warrington for the first three
laps.
SDFTA president Jim McMurren passed Warrington into three for the
first spot, while Marty Lewis clawed his way around Jim Connolly
for second. Brad Spencer grabbed his second main event win of the night
in the very competitive Seventies Singles class. In second spot was
Dana
Perri and third went to Rod Lake, all Yamaha mounted.
