AHRMA National
Willow Springs Raceway
Walt James Stadium
May 5th 2002

 By Jamey Blunt

Go fast, turn left, go fast, and turn left!  That’s all any one of the 84 entrants had to do, to emerge victorious on the banked dirt oval at Willow Springs.  For this particular AHRMA National Larry Wilburn brought in eight truck loads of D.G!  He further more spared no expense in time or money so as to provide the best possible racing surface, it was.  Mother nature provided plenty of sunshine, although the wind did kick up in the afternoon, calling for more frequent appearances from the water truck.  Dennis Suter (The Promoter) buried his head into his computer like a mad scientist, and produced flawless heat, main, and stat sheets.  All the while Chris and Jeff Apple handled the starting and staging respectively.  Of course Larry Wilburn hadn’t left or hardly slept in 48 hours, and was always at hand to maintain the track!  At 10:30am with the AHRMA Road Race National just to the west (on the big track) the first flat track practice session got underway!  At high noon the first of 19 heat races began the day’s battle.  After advancing through their respective heat races and a lunch break some 17 main events were posted.

Two-thirty pm had the first main event line up, to meet one of the hardest classes to adapt to.  The Dino Class – these machines are mostly Indians and Harley’s of the foot clutch, hand shift variety.  Defiantly something to get used to, at the start Gordon Menzie jumped to the lead only to have it taken away by heat race winner David Devarny.  Just past the start finish line Tom Horton on the Dodge Brothers Indian put a wheel under Menzie to take second place away.  Expiring once again was a disappointed “Dangerous” Dubb Ferrell on the Bob Nicholas Indian.  Dub barely completing 20 laps in the last two years on this machine says; “I’ve called it Quits”!  Lap two saw Devarny turn his fastest lap of 27 seconds flat.  The order at the finish, pretty much strung out was Devarny, Horton, and Menzie.

The AHRMA Classic 250 came down to the last lap.  Heat race winner, and former National #11 Jim McMurren lead every lap but the one that counted.  Taking over the lead on the final go round Bakersfield California’s Ron Lessley put his Bultaco in front of McMurren’s Harley Sprint.  Lessley besting McMurren’s lap time by 4/10, taking it to 26.4/10.  Thus gathering the win over McMurren, and Steve Lacey on the ex Gary Nixon Sonic-Weld Triumph 250.

In the Sportsman 250 the stage was set in the heat race.  Tom Horton on a Suzuki Trackmaster Twin, in a “Class” move laid his bike down going into turn three on the last lap to avoid taking heat race winner Bruce Reynolds out.  So, when they lined up for the main event, all parties knew this was going to the finish.  From pole position Reynolds took the lead over Horton and Long Beach California’s Rich Trait.  Picking up where they left off the two pulled away from the pack.  Reynolds on lap three lowered his lap time to 26 sec flat and began to break clear of Horton.  Meanwhile Trait on the OSSA was fading allowing Scott Shoup from Potterville to capture third.

The 250 Novice Main had a repeat heat race performance from Todd Eagan.  Riding Craig Johnson’s clean Bultaco Astro; Eagan made it heat and main wins for his sponsor over Kurt Speir, and Don Barmnkian.

Always a big class at AHRMA races is the Vet Class; today was no exception.  After a two-minute hold for #55 to appear we learned Tom Horton had “called it a day”.  Having had three of this mounts expire with mechanicals, Horton decided that was enough.  The racing in the Vet Class is fierce all the way through the pack.  Greg Wilburn put his Triumph into the lead off the line.  Rick Reed looking as though he had a two-foot tow strap attached to Wilburn shot past the first time going into turn three.  At the line on lap one it was a dead heat.  And we still had seven laps to go!  While Reed was glued to Wilburn, some 10-bike lengths back Jeff Lessley was on the move.  Lap six saw Wilburn lower the fastest lap time to 24.2/10 sec as he started to break clear of Reed.  At the checkered it was Wilburn, Reed, and Lessley.

Support 450 Heat Race winner “Jumper” Jim Rosa lowered his best lap time to 23.8/10 sec but that proved not to be quite fast enough.  As Rosa lead the first four laps over Ian Foulds on the Jim Grant Rotax, and looked to have this in the bag.  But lap four saw Southland Racings Alex Wood catch fire.  Someone threw his switch and Wood shot pat Foulds and was all over Rosa for the lead.  Then going into turn three with one and a half laps to go Alex Wood make it stick, and turning a 23.5/10 lap time to boot, wood on one of the nicest C&J Honda 450’s on any planet won over Cycle Gear’s Rosa, and Ian Foulds.

Before the start of he Classic 500/750 a racer know to almost all had a seizure and had to be transported by ambulance.  This allowing time for some tack maintenance.  As of this writing, Bob “Crazy” Cobb is said to be out of the hospital and doing fine.  We all wish him the best and hope to see him and his dog soon!  Back to the Classic 500/750, Chris Apple (our starter) took to the front over Jeff Lessley, Clark Edgington, Gordon Menzie, and Jeff Apple respectively.  Jeff Apple going into turn three on the second lap took second place position.  Now we had Apple then Apple (and yes they’re bothers).  On the start of lap five Jeff Apple lost it in turn two giving second back to Jeff Lessley.  At the finish the order stayed Chris Apple, Jeff Lessley, and Clark Edgington.

Marty Lewis out of Orinda California on a very fast Rod Lake Triumph had to work for this one, as he got away third off the line in the Senior Class to Tim Wolf and Sal Pelusa.  However the red flag was thrown, so everyone had another shot at it.  On the re-start two time AHRMA National Champion Mickey Aizola lead the pack, with Lewis second and Tim Wolf from the back row in third.  Lewis shot past Aizola on the second trip down the back straight and never looked back.  Aizola then bobbled in turn three letting the always-hard charging Sal Pelusa by for second spot.  Once they settled in this order that’s were they stayed

The biggest class of the day, the Sportsman 750 had 13 riders make the main event.  From the first wave of the flag, Steve Miller out of Torrance California put his Trackmaster 750 Yamaha out front, from the outside of the front row.  Hot on his heels on a 750 Triumph was Greg Wilburn.  Miller riding the highest line of anyone all day, some to feet from the hay bales turned a 23.8/10 sec lap time.  Then on lap three, going in to turn three it happened, Miller on his high line left the barn door wide open, Wilburn couldn’t help but roll through it into first.  By lap five Wilburn was three bike lengths away from Miller, and Jeff Lessley was changing for third place position.  By the last lap the drying track had rose lap times and lowered the likely hood of any passing.  Wilburn picked-up the win, with Miller second, and Lessley across for third.

Twenty-three seconds flat would be the overall fasted time of the day.  This set by a 16 year old that placed 5th in his heat race, and racing a Jim Grant Harley XR-750 for the first time in his life. Jimmy Wood from Redlands California followed Jim Rosa, and Richard Pollock into turn one.  It didn’t matter, across the stripe on lap one “Woody” shot past Pollock and set sail for Rosa.  Down the back shoot for the third time Wood blasted past Rosa for the lead.  Lap four saw the fast time for the day set as Jimmy Wood sailed to an easy victory.  Jim Rosa Stayed well in front of Richard Pollock who in turn had separated himself substantially from the field.

Riders over 60 years of age make up the Super Senior class.  A fast Mickey Aizola lead into turn one only to have the door shut hard by Ralph Porzelt.  Prozelt however would only be a survivor for two laps at the front as Aizola returned the favor and regained the lead with five laps reaming.  Marshal Jennings charged hard, and kept gaining ground on Prozelt, but flat ran out of time and had to settle for third.

Rob Nolin and Ben Meyer both won there heat races in the 70s Singles Class Nolin had the faster time, but not by too much.  In the main Nolin shot into the lead, Meyer running second almost bought the farm on lap two, in turn two handing second over to Dave Johnson.  (Than you very much) all this moved Robert Hansen from Nevada to third and James Ottele up to fourth.  By the completion of eight, Meyer had worked back past Ottele and Hansen, but could do no better than third.  Nolin had disappeared for the win, with Johnson a distant second.

As soon as the results were compiled, the trophy presentation commenced.  The victors receiving their spoils. The Apples, Dennis Suter, and Larry Wilburn received many thanks and the racers followed the setting sun out of Willow Springs Raceway!!!
