My experience shows early engine numbers are
125cc - 50000's
175cc - 60000's
250cc - 70000's and 80000's
Early engines had vin number stamped on bottom of engine.
Appears practice was stopped some time in 1975. 

The National Service manage told me that no list exists to show which 

specific numbered engine went into which specific numbered chassis.
