A perfect race track and ideal conditions greeted the one hundred sixty nine participants for round three of the West Coast Vintage Dirt Track series held at Tulare Cycle Park. The expected heat wave temperatures never materialized, and track prep as stated was perfect.

Twelve riders staged for the A&A Racing/Works Performance Senior main event, a class comprised of riders over the age of fifty on any machine of their choosing as long as it was manufactured prior to 1974. Keith Speir pulled the trigger first to get the initial jump only to have Tom Horton close the door on him between turns one and two for the lead. Sixth to leave the line was Rod Lake who shot past the three riders in front of him down the back straight to settle in at second by turn three. The running order a lap and a half in was Horton, Lake, Ron Lessley, Joe Brown, Speir, Gary White, and Mark Stuckert. At the half way point Lake could match Horton's pace, but wasn't closing the gap, as his fastest lap of 19.24/100 seconds to Horton's 19.27/100 seconds were dead even. A lap later Lake had a scare in turn two, but pulled off the save of the night to continue on. Another lap later had Speir push past Brown to take fourth, cementing the finishing order as Horton, Lake, Lessley, Speir, Brown, White, and Stuckert.

Thirty five year old racers on any machine of their choosing make up the K&N Filters/Maxxis Tires Vet class. Starting from pole, Mike Vital did what he usually does and that's go straight to the front. Jason Craven, Kurt Chandler, Lloyd McGregor, Tony Harrell, and Mike O'Neil all put in a valiant chase but Vital was gone, opening up a six bike length gap just on the first lap. Just past the half way mark McGregor went too high in turn two and kissed a hay bale going down. This lap also saw Vital do something no one else in the class could do, that was turn a lap under nineteen seconds. Vital put in an 18.89/100 second lap as he sailed to an unquestioned victory. The final tally was Vital, Craven, Chandler, Harrell, and O'Neil.

The Brown's Cycles/ARD Ignitions Classic 500 and Dino class were combined with ten riders competing. Chris Rudy on his potent H-D KR750cc took point from pole position with Lenny Rodriguez second and Mike Vital trying his hand aboard a 1946 Indian 750cc third, but first for the Dino's. Confused? Remember there are two classes running. Vital make quick work of Rodriguez for second on the track with Ross Stuckert moving forward to the fourth place spot. At the front Rudy posted a 19.89/100 second lap time that no one could match as he pulled away. On lap three Stuckert made a move and took third away from Rodriguez, who now had Joe Pape and Bill Kolkman closing on him as well, making it a three way battle for fourth with two laps remaining.  At the finish Rudy long gone won the classic 500, with Vital second on the track but first in the Dino group. Stuckert and Rodriguez were second and third for the 500's, with Kolkman second to Vital in the Dino.

Rod Lake from the outside of the front row lead the C&J Racing Frames/Berkeley Yamaha, Honda Modern 500 field through turn one. Ron Lessley was away second with Tom Horton on his heals. One lap down saw Horton displace Lessley for second with Allan Malm fourth, Gary Swan fifth, and Dave Cheney sixth. By crossed flags (Half way) Lake had a two second gap over Horton turning 19.58/100 second lap times that Horton couldn't come close to on this day. Horton's best lap was a 20.20/100 second time.

For the rest of the race it was follow the leader, except for Dave Cheney, who found speed and courage to battle his way past both Swan and Malm to finish in fourth. Horton came home alone in second, with Lessley by himself in third. Lake in another zip code had left the field.

P J Osmer led the field into turn one in the Kawasaki of Simi Valley/San Diego off Road 250cc Open final. But Osmer's lead was short lived as Briar Bauman took over up front just prior to the finish of the first lap. Mikey Avila ran third and quickly was pressuring Osmer to get past to stop Bauman from checking out. All the while Tony Davila ran in fourth as this front pack broke away from the rest of the field. Entering turn one for the second time Avila slipped under Osmer for second. There were three riders all turning lap times in the 19.30/100 second range, as the front three were pretty equal. By the fifth lap Davila moved Osmer back to fourth as he took over third, but this is where his forward momentum would stop. At the checkered flag Bauman won by ten lengths over Avila who was just as far ahead of Davila, who had gaped Osmer.

No mono-shock frames or four valve engines are allowed in the Maxima Racing Oils/Megacycle Cams 500 Support class. Mike O'Neil timed starter Fred Allen perfectly to lead off the line. Mike Gonzales ran second with Jim Ottele third, Jeff Gonzales fourth, and Gary Ritchie fifth. On the exit of turn two on the second lap Mike Gonzales made an inside move underneath O'Neil to take the lead away. Fred Bennett making up for a poor start had found his way up to the fifth place position by this time as well and was on a mission. On the following lap Ottele threw it away on the entrance to turn three while all alone, thankfully he was unhurt except for his pride. Lap five had Mike Gonzales turn a 19.24/100 second lap as he had a clear track; this lap also saw Bennett fight his way up to third. For the remaining laps Jeff Gonzales, Craven, and Ritchie would all fight over the fourth place position with the finishing order being Mike Gonzales, O'Neil, Bennett, Jeff Gonzales, Craven, and Ritchie.

Vizzo Racing's Garrett Stout had a big weekend, not just from his results but also due to the fact he was given the opportunity to throw a leg over a mount last seen under national #20 Johnny Murphree. His first test came in the AGV Helmets/Motion Pro Open Amateur "A" main event where Stout launched from pole position into the lead with Eric England, Kayl Kolkman, and Briar Bauman in hot pursuit. By lap two Stout, England, and Kolkman were getting away from Bauman and the rest of the twelve rider field. Then on the entrance to turn one on lap four England made a mistake and went wide leaving the door open for Kolkman to advance to second. Lap five saw Stout have a problem allowing Kolkman to close the gap and start looking for a way past. Then with two laps remaining Kolkman stuck a wheel underneath Stout in turn one taking them both out, and leaving England no where to go but over the top of the fallen riders and summersault off the track. On official review it was called a race with the victory going to Stout, England taking second (Kolkman having caused the incident was given last place) Bauman third, and Joey Alves fourth. To his credit Kolkman uttered not a single protest, and was a sportsman.

The Digger Helm Pro 600 twenty lap main event saw Kris Bunch leads the pack into turn one with Don Howard, Kayl Kolkman, and Garrett Stout giving chase. Howard, whether it was from too tall of gearing or wanting the high line to come in would stay against the hay bales for the entire race. By lap three Eric England ran fifth with Tony Davila sixth, and Ian Foulds seventh. Young Mikey Avila starting on the back row was up to eighth and starting to find his rhythm as he was moving forward, despite his smaller displaced 250cc mount. Just the opposite of Howard, Stout was working the inside line and was applying pressure on Kolkman and Howard. By lap five Kolkman made the pass stick on Howard for second and Stout went by Howard as well in turn four to take over at third. The gap to Bunch at the front was 1.5 seconds as Bunch put in an 18.52/100 second lap. Two laps later Kolkman bobbled in turn four which allowed Stout to close to within striking distance. Then on lap nine between turns three and four Stout pounced and took away second from Kolkman, by now though Bunch had a 2.2 second lead which Stout's fastest lap of 18.33 just couldn't erase in the remaining laps. For the rest of the race Avila would be the biggest gainer climbing up to a well deserved fifth, and Foulds would settle in at sixth, making the finishing order Bunch, Stout, Kolkman, Howard, Avila, and Foulds. For a recap, this gave Stout a first, a second, and the overall fastest lap of the day, not bad for his first outing with the Vizzo Racing Team.

With a newly cut race track and heartfelt memorial to Ken Barrow attended by friends and fellow racers, Round #3 was one of the best events at Tulare Cycle Park to date. All
participants in Kens class, the Super Seniors, lit up Monte Cristo cigars in his honor as anyone who wished to stood up at the riders meeting and expressed their feelings about Ken. This was followed by almost the entire audience grabbing anything they could ride and saluting Ken in three backwards laps around the track. It was a truly awesome and fitting tribute to our fallen comrade. Then the racing began! Close and exciting the perfect track made for spectacular racing. Congrats to Ted Hubbard for his first time trophying in the Super Sr class and Kris Bunch on his first win in the Digger Pro main! Up next, the return of flat track racing to the Ventura Raceway June 23! We are hoping to build this event into the new Del Mar for the future so come out and show your support! Enjoy a weekend at the beach with your family and friends. There are ad spaces available for sale in the program!
