Southern California Flat Track Association
Race 12: Perris Raceway
Jimmy Wood Wins His Second in a Row
By Rodney Rutherford
PERRIS, CA, November 14, 2010

On a relaxed Sunday, Southern California Flat Track Association (SCFTA) concluded the final day of a two day event that started on Saturday. The daytime event, unusual to the SCFTA went well and the track still retained the moisture sufficiently even with sun beating down on it and constant pounding of motorcycles.

In a repeat of Saturday nights Pro Main, Southland Racing Products speedsters Jimmy Wood and Kayl Kolkman, were once again guiding the pack around in the twenty lap Main. The two rocket-men have been staples in the SCFTA Pro Main in the last three rounds and vying for the tops spots on the box in a routine manner. Several micro battles loomed behind them, Brandon Bates in third fighting to hold it against the charging Alex Wood. Just a few bike lengths back Robert Bush, having a great day of racing in a donnybrook with Hayes.

On lap eight Jimmy Wood and Kayl Kolkman dodging traffic and ripping away from the chasers, by now Alex Wood has his own space alone in third, Bates was now feeling the heat of Hayes and doing an excellent job of defending his fourth place against Hayes. The race goes smoothly and Race Tech's Jimmy Wood wraps up his second Pro Main win in as many days, Troy Lee Designs racer Kayl Kolkman second, and Alex Wood third. Bates keeps the blocks on Hayes and finishes a well earned fourth with Hayes rounding out the top five.

Clayton Williams ran uncontested in the Youth 50-65cc in the heat, then kept his game on and did the same in the Main for the win, Alyssa Flores, and Frank Flores third. Logan Bush had his day in the sun with four second lead by lap two over Williams in Youth 85cc plus, in the good air he stayed clear of any  trouble with the win. Monica Gil is riding better by the race and raced in for the second with Williams third.

Vet 35+ tapped the chalk start with seven sliders and 2010 AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes, returning from an impressive display of racing the previous night he was ready to grapple once again. It was Robert Bush, a seasoned competitor with SCFTA throwing down the law in first around midway through the race, Hayes second and Jim Rosa third. Robert Bush fought the good fight but the highly competitive Hayes was able to initiate a pass for the lead and win, Robert Bush second, Jim Rosa third, Paul Herman, and Woody Carlson fifth.

Senior Vet 50+ racer Joe Steffen stomps his way to front, Wes Powell, James Wood, Jim Ottele, and Halbe Scheper fifth. The class is always a white knuckler and the top four showcased their talent in  this tension filled battle. Screeching the dirt Steffen keeps all comers off his turf with a strong ride for the win, Powell, James Wood, Ottele, and Scheper stayed locked in formation to the checkers for the second through fifth in that order.

Nine Open Novices revved at the red begging for the green, Jess Flores commands his bike to the lead. Nick Gil has struggled with his starts but comes on like a banshee riding in second, Corey Bauman third, Dan Shaw fourth, and Bill Wright fifth. Nick Gil starts pushing Jess Flores for the lead and takes it on lap six speeding past the checkers two laps later for the win, Jess Flores, Bauman, Shaw, and Wright fifth.
Senior Novice racer Keith Speir was up and away in the Senior Novice but encountered stiff resistance from Bill Kolkman as the finish closed in. With a last surge of power Speir defended his position against the attacking Bill Kolkman for the win, Bill Kolkman second, Wright third, Bauman, and Fred Berger fifth.

Allen McBee ran hot on Saturday and torqued to the point in the Classic Vintage with Jeff Apple in second, and Lenny Rodriguez third. McBee went into a zone with Apple attempting to keep pace and sliding out near the end of the eight lap Main. McBee kept his zone on and wheeled in for the win, Rodriguez taking advantage of Apple's slip in for second, Apple able to remount pulls in for third,Tom Ferguson, and Jim McMurren fifth. Steve Fortune resisted Robert Bush’s offense in the 750 Vintage for a win, Robert Bush, and Jim Ottele third.

Jim Lundgren jumped the green in the Bomber ranks forcing a restart, John Lundgren is into the early lead as Jeff Gonzales tucks into second and the two separate from the chasing cluster. Jim Lundgren occupies third, Jim Steet, and Speir fifth. John Lundgren manufactures a safety margin over Jeff Gonzales at the checkers and the two finish first and second respectively. Jim Lundgren stays molded to third while Speir and Steet swap positions as the checkers neared, Speir for fourth and Steet fifth.

SCFTA concludes their 2010 schedule and can call the new facility a well earned success. Looking forward to 2011, SCFTA gives a hearty thank you to all competitors, fans, crew, and Lucas Oil for all the support and outstanding racing throughout the 2010 season. Another year of grass roots sliding is on the itinerary for next year, please stay tuned to  http://www.southerncaliforniaflattrack.com/ for information.
