Mulder’s Vintage Mile
returns to Sacramento
Story by Karen Gould –
Checkered Flag Photography
July 31, 2011
After eight years of
“horses only” on
the dirt at the Cal Expo State Fairgrounds race track, Eddie Mulder’s
West Coast Dirt Track series was welcomed back with open arms on this
Sunday following Saturday night’s AMA GNC mile. A heartfelt thank
you
went to Bob Bellino and Circle Bell Racing from one hundred and ninety
riders. Those riders started showing up at the gate excited to be
on
the mile track well before the 8 A.M registration time. The day
started with perfect cool and breezy racing weather warming up to the
mid nineties in the afternoon. Thanks to the generous donations
of
many and excellent track preparation by Pearson, the track was
perfectly groomed and racy smooth equipped with an air fence for
safety. Series sponsors Rod Lake and Digger Helm were both in
attendance to enjoy the day’s events and as always Motion Pro and
K&N Filters provided some wonderful gifts and continue their
generous financial support of the WCDTS. We are proud and
grateful for
the continued generosity of all our series sponsors. A special
treat
for this race came from Triumph America who generously donated a 2011
Triumph Tiger 800 for use as the Safety sweep vehicle.
The day’s riders included
participants
from Edmonton and Calgary, Canada, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Washington,
New Mexico and cities all over northern and southern California. Racing
began with Wade Boyd aboard his R1 getting the jump off the line and
leading the thirteen rider pack of seniors start to finish in the first
of eighteen heat races. (This bike was later disqualified as not
eligible for this class). Four heats of Vet riders included
riders not
seen aboard their motorcycles since the last mile race in 2003 such as
Donnie Howard and those that are current top vintage riders. Vet
heat
race winners were Lloyd McGregor, Donnie Howard, Steve Johnson,
and
Scott Whittaker.
Chris Rudy finished the
Classic
500-750 side valve class at the top of the heap and Tom Horton took the
Modern 500 heat win. Mickey Alzola who will celebrate his 72 birthday
this week was the talk of track sharing heat race wins with Charles
Higdon in the Sr. Novice/Super Sr. heat race that included 14 riders
mostly all younger than Alzola. Happy birthday Mickey!
Two heats of Modern 750
riders rode
for positioning in the mains in this class. Robert Hansen rode to
an
easy victory in the first 750 heat and Tom Horton finished the second
one in front. Ron Long and Keith Bradford, both riding the #33
battled
for the front spot in the first 500 Support heat race. At the finish it
went to Long. Rick Reed took the other 500 Support victory.
The Open Amateur class was
by far the
biggest class of the day. Four heat races with 13 riders each
produced
winners David Bush, James Monaco, Bronson Bauman and Vaughn McCafferty
to head up the upcoming A Main with finishing orders dictating
positions all the way back into B and C Mains.
Damon Coca was on fire on
his Honda
250 showing the leading the rest of the pack to the checkers in his 250
Open heat race. Behind, Mark Fragoso held second for a minute
until
Andrew Luker got under him. Luker finished second, Fragoso was
third..
A short intermission
followed the heat
races giving the spectators some time to meet and greet the riders in
their pits and get a closer look at some of the classic vintage
bikes.
After the necessary equipment tweaks by the mechanics the riders and
their bikes were ready for the mains.
Kenny Thiebaud riding a
1970 Triumph
750 in the Coventry Spares Senior class led the pack pole to pole while
Alzola was busy further back moving through the pack to finish
sixth.
Robert Hansen and Rick Reed finished second and third
respectively.
Thad Wolff, riding the oldest bike, a 1958 BSA 650, finishing the race
in the seventh position.
Donnie Howard has not lost
his speed.
Fast in his time and still faster than his competitors Howard shot off
the A&A Racing Vet A main start line in front and never looked
back. Behind him the second position changed five times during
this
eight lap main but ultimately went to Steve Johnson with Kevin Bricker
in the third position. Kenneth Holland was flying in front of
fourteen
other riders in his Vet B main to clean up this one. Joe Mc Coy
and
Chris Baker rounded out this podium and Robert Bacosa who ended up in
the C main due a mechanical failure in his heat race, handily won this
race leading Joe Pineda and Cory Bauman to the checkers in the Vet C
class. Bacosa, nearly 50 years old, missed making the main
event
during the Grand National Race on Saturday night by one position.
Maybe the prettiest
scooters at any
vintage race, the JRC Engineering Classic 500-750 side valve brakeless
class included a 1937 Ariel 500, a 1962 Harley KR 750, several Triumph
500’s and more. Eye candy to the crowd, these riders put on a
show.
Tom Horton rode to an easy victory aboard his 67 Triumph after heat
race winner, Chris Rudy pulled out with a mechanical, Perry Smith and
Rodd Lighthouse also mounted on Triumph 500’s finished second and
third. Four of the eleven riders left the race with mechanical
issues,
a nearly expected malady to these antique rides.
Horton came back to take
the Megacycle
Cams Modern 500 main home, aboard a Triumph with two Honda 350 riders
Perry Smith and John Lundgren following. Lundgren had moved up six
positions during this six lap main to finish in the third spot.
Triumphs were definitely
the most
winning vintage bikes of the day. Alzola was back on the track in the
Sr Novice/Super Sr main event aboard one of Eddie Mulder’s finely tuned
1966 Triumph 750s and taking command of the front position from Charlie
Higdon during the second lap. Herb Wolff also mounted on a Mulder
Triumph started and finished this race in third. Higdon was also
piloting a Triumph.
Twelve riders lined up for
the Penton
Racing Products Modern 750 event. Tom Horton got the hole shot at
the
drop of the green flag but Paul Herman easily took the lead before the
end of lap two and rode the remaining four laps in front .Horton
finished second. Robert Mc Donald and Don Galloway had their own
race
to the finish with Galloway capturing the fourth position following
McDonald, third, at the checkers. Again it was a Triumph that
earned
the win.
After winning his heat
race Ron Long
racing a Yamaha TT 500 showed the other Brown’s Cycles 500
Support
class riders how to get the job done leading this race start to
finish. Jay Gosvenor worked his way from the fifth position in
lap one
to finish second followed by Keith Bradford. Arlen Anderson
took the
lead in the B 500 Support Main when Jim Steet’s Yamaha 500 suffered a
mechanical failure in lap three. Anderson held that lead to the
finish
while back in the pack Robert Koch was picking off riders to earn a
third place finish. Mike Fowler followed Anderson for second.
Clearly the fastest rider
of the day,
Rod Lake Racing’s Bronson Bauman rode six incredible laps of the
Megacycle Cams Open Amateur A Main putting a considerable distance
between himself and the rest of the pack with each lap before pulling
off the track coming out of the third turn in lap six with a sputtering
machine. Scotty Hampton was busy gaining positions behind Bauman
to
take over the lead with Bauman’s demise. James Monaco maintained
his
position to earn a second behind Hampton and Kyle Montagne rounded out
the podium in third.
Following in his dad’s
footsteps
Donnie Howard’s son Nathan was first off the line in the Open Amateur B
Main but Zane Amaro took advantage of the draft and got around Howard
for the lead in lap four. Back in the pack Ron Long was gaining
positions working his way to the front but ran out of laps before
getting there. Amaro took the win, Howard was second and Nick Gil
followed in third. Robert Bacosa battled with Long but at the
finish
Bacosa took fourth.
Danny Giguere suffered
severe injuries
to both his legs in a race crash a couple of years ago and had not
ridden since. With custom made braces on both his legs Danny rode
today’s Open Amateur C Main from the start to the checkers in the front
of this eighteen rider pack. Joe Mc Coy and Gene Fitzsimmons traded
places in the second spot three times before Greg Riddle broke up the
party passing Fitzsimmons for the third spot in lap five.
Heads were turning when
Damon Coca
took to the dirt on his 250 in the Maxima Oils Open 250 event, Coca
rode every bit as hard and fast as any other rider today smooth and
comfortable easily finishing in front of Andrew Luker and Marcus
Fragoso. There is no doubt that we will see more of these
youngsters
in the years to come.
A great day was had by all
and many exclamations of joy, awe and once in a lifetime
experiences were shared
all day. The ambulance never moved and with the tremendous
support shown, hopefully
there will be repeat Sacramento Vintage Miles for years to
come.
