In the Bomber heat race Simi Valley Kawasaki's Jimmy Lundgren
(70L) nailed the start to lead #82e Travis Petton the 2nd, #89 Danny
Perkins, and #26 Ian Foulds (on a borrowed motorcycle). Lundgren on the
only Honda in an all Yamaha TT-500 field was holding his own when
Petton tagged his back wheel between turns one and two. This move stood
Petton's bike up and slowed his pace as Foulds who slipped under
Perkins in turn one was carrying faster corner speed but now had Petton
right in front of him heading toward the ground. With no where to go
Foulds became a victim with little choice but to run over the bike in
front of him. As for Perkins, who always rides a wide line on the
Perris race track, he had squared up the corner and was set for a good
drive out of turn two when his way was blocked by the two motorcycles
down in front of him. Thus Perkins had no choice but to hold on for a
wild ride up and over. Lundgren left the mess behind with Petton
knocked out cold, Foulds battered and bleeding and Perkins with a hole
in his gas tank. A lot of gas was spilled on the track which was lighted
on fire and burned away. None of the three riders on the ground made
the heat re-start.
