SCFTA JUNE NEWSLETTER
Bruce Sanford's Southern California Flat Track Association
Round #3 Perris, Calif. 5-23-2004 by Jamey Blunt
Jerry and Grace Burton the original owners of Perris
Raceway created the best TT-Scrambles race track in Ca. For that matter
in the world, at least to me! What you have there today is two superb moto-cross
tracks, and a newly added 1/6 mile oval covering part of the old rough
scrambles track. The force these days at Perris is Freddy Edwards, an X
flat tracker himself, so it was only natural he build an oval. Edwards
mans the grader himself to ensure the 93 participants on this day had the
best racing surface possible. Seventeen heat races were put to bed and
the track regroomed for the first of the main events by 1:20 in the afternoon.
A growing class is the Men's Xr-100, heat race winner
Larry Spektor sat on pole as the green flag waved, but Don Fraunberger
nailed the start followed by Vince Graves, Spektor, Andy Wood, and Danny
Perez who wheeled half way to turn one. Fraunberger lead for two laps till
Graves showed him a wheel entering turn one, and then went past for the
lead down the back straight. Once up front Graves turned a 15.36/100 sec.
lap trying to get away. By lap four Spektor got around Fraunberger for
second but was eight bike lengths back of Graves. When the checkered flag
came out Spektor had to settle for second as Graves was gone, Fraunberger
always smiling took third.
One of the most contested classes is the Vet, where
riders are over the age of 35 on any machine of their choice. Heat race
winner Jeff (Jester) Johnson wheeled for the fans entering the track only
to loop it over backwards, and then bow to the crowd. On the first start
Woody Carlson went down causing a re-start. This time Simi Valley Kawasaki's
John Lundgren lead into turn one with Johnson stuffing it up the inside.
Mr. Ed's Joe Steffen not wanting Johnson to get away shot past Lundgren
with Tom Horton following suit, which put Lundgren back to fourth. Four
laps in and Johnson couldn't shake Steffen as these two separated from
the field. Horton was in third all by himself (on a Triumph yet) with Lundgren
fourth now feeling pressure from Richard Pollock and Steve Miller. Johnson
would go on to win with a best lap time of 14.12/100 seconds with Steffen
a very close second
Some performances worthy of mention came in the Classic
Vintage race where Tom Horton on a beautiful Montesa held off the charges
of Bruce Reynolds equal fully fine Bultaco for this brakeless victory.
The Bomber class is huge, with all the weapons being
Yamaha 500's in one configuration or another. Joe Steffen lead the hungry
pack into turn one with Ron Moore, Steve Miller, Richard Pollock, and Richard
Hutchins nipping at his heels. Steffen knowing this was a tough class tried
to get away early while Miller was pressuring Moore slowing them both down
allowing for this to happen. Further back in the pack Brad Rudy on a newly
acquired Yamaha (nice, really nice!) was working his way forward from the
second row. Lap four saw Moore under pressure have problems and pull out,
advancing Miller to second and Pollock to third. At the front Steffen had
opened up a full straight away lead and turned a 14.82/100 sec. lap. Miller
would go on to finish second with Pollock third and Rudy climbing up to
fourth on the final go round.
Craig Johnson had the fastest time of the day at 13.46/100
seconds in route to the Pro class heat race victory. But fastest doesn't
always mean first, as the Pro Main would attest to. Johnson on a new Honda
450 was pulling low altitude maneuvers, but it was Southland Racing's Alex
Wood on his C & J Framed Honda who lead into turn one at the start.
Wood was flawless; he needed to be as one mistake would have cost
him the win. While Johnson hounded Wood, Richard Pollock did the same to
Johnson. Shaun Larkin looking very smooth ran fourth with Jim (Jumper)
Rosa on a borrowed bike in fifth. Woods fastest lap of 13.84/100 seconds
came just after the ½ way point as Johnson continually showed him
a wheel. Wood however continued on unfazed, showing great maturity and
poise under pressure. Two laps from the finish Johnson almost threw it
all away between turns one and two trying to get under Wood. When the checkered
flag came out Wood had held his ground, Johnson was second, Pollock a straight
away back was third, and Larkin was closing in fourth.
Thus closed a great day of racing at this great new
facility, Sanford and his S.C.F.T.A. will pick up here at Perris for round
#4 on June 13th. Sanford has also said there will be an awards banquet
at the end of the 2004 season where awards, product, and a picnic will
be served up.
