Jamey Blunt interviews Stevie
Eddie
Mulder's West Coast Vintage Dirt Track Series
Round #3
June
11th, 2005
Tulare, Calif.
Article
by Jamey Blunt
Tulare
Cycle Park
has undergone some changes,
first and foremost new ownership. Rick Hollenbeck has taken over the
helm from
Steve and Robin Monger. Rick's first order of business, to reshape the
oval
race track, making it wider and faster which became ever apparent to
the one
hundred sixty three participants by the conclusion of the twenty two
heat
races. Not to forget that after sunset this perfectly groomed track
would
become even faster as the moisture came back to the racing surface.
The
"K&N"/"Saddlemen" Vet class
continues to grow with twenty seven fighting for one of twelve spots in
the
"A" main. The vet class consists of riders over the age of thirty
five on any year and size motorcycle they might choose. Tulare's
own Mike Vital has been on a roll lately, (ever since he got his
C&J framed
Honda) and with the fastest heat race time victory, he sat on pole.
Vital put
this to good use as he launched to the front as the green flag flew.
KTM
mounted Steve craft jumped in behind in second with Craig Johnson and
Joel Kath
in tow. Two laps in and Vital was gone, turning his fastest lap of
18.92/100
seconds. Kath was showing Johnson a wheel at every opportunity as these
two
both pushed past Craft. On the final lap Craft made a huge mistake
between
turns one and two going wide, this giving Tony Harrell an opening which
he took
to move up to fourth.
Can anyone stop
Mickey Alzola? This is the question the
entire filed of the "A&A Racing"/ "Maxima" Super Senior
class is asking itself. Alzola on an Eddie Mulder tuned C&J framed
Triumph
always seems to rise to the occasion. This time however it wasn't a
cake walk
as Ken Barrow stepped it up. Alzola lead of the line only to Barrow
take it
away out of turn two, Alzola glued himself to Barrow's rear wheel and
waited.
By lap two these two were pulling away from the field with Mel Stoner
in third
and Roy Burris in fourth. These are racers over sixty years of age
folks, and
they go fast! With two laps o go Alzola made a run at Barrow going into
turn
three and pulled alongside. Alzola turned his fastest lap of 20.53/100
seconds
on lap four as he put Bob Harris a lap down, just as Barrow's hand went
up with
a mechanical. With Barrow out it left the finishing order Alzola,
Stoner,
Burris, and Dave Cheney moving up to fourth.
Michael Avila,
Evan Stafford, and Briar Bauman are three
youngsters to watch as their careers progress. In the "Berkley
Honda-Yamaha"/"Shoei Helmets" Youth 85cc main these guys really
went at it. Avila lead off
the line
as Stafford had to bring his front wheel back
down to
earth before he could get going. Bauman was away in third as this front
pack
separated themselves from the rest of the field. Lap three saw Avila
turn his quickest lap at 19.34/100 seconds, and this on an 85cc
machine. Bauman
dug deep and found extra speed to get past Stafford
and
was going after Avila.
With one lap
remaining Bauman's goal was right in front of him as he'd caught Avila
and put in the fastest lap of the race at 19.06/100 seconds. But
catching up
to, and passing are two different things, and with only one lap left
Avila was
rock solid and held his position mistake free to go on to victory.
Crowd favorite
Lauren Wallace was stage in the "San
Diego Off Road Magazine"/"Megacycle Cams" 250 Open main where any
year 250 machine is allowed to compete. Garrett Stout got the initial
jump over
Patrick McNamara and Wallace. At the competition of one Wallace was up
to
second and on the move, taking the lead entering turn three on the
second lap
to cheers from the stands. Three laps in the books and the order was
Wallace,
(turning 19.43/100 seconds) McNamara and Stout. With two laps left
McNamara was
showing Wallace a wheel and pressuring hard trying to find a way
around. All
the while Stout was beginning to fade as Kayl Kolkman moved up into the
third
spot. The pressure was intense on the final lap as the spectators were
standing, McNamara pulled along side Wallace, but she was unfazed and
held
position to take the victory. Kolkman was third with Danielle Diaz
making a
spectacular drive on the last lap to finish fourth.
One of the war
classes in dirt track racing is the "Red
Hot Racing Frames"/"Coventry Spares" 500 support class. This
could also be referred to as the TT-500 class. Mr. Ed's Joe Steffen
shot to the
front of the "A" main field. Jeff Gonzales ran second with Ascot
legend Ron Moore in third. Moore
used his experience and made short work of Gonzales for second and set
his
sights on Steffen. Scott Graham running fourth was closing on Gonzales
by the
half way point. This lap also saw Moore
take the lead crossing the stripe from Steffen. At the white flag Moore
lead but Steffen put down his best lap of 19.34/100 seconds to regain
the lead
in turn two. Entering turn three Moore
made a run at Steffen and it was a drag race to the stripe with Steffen
winning
it. Gonzales found his rhythm and held off Graham for third.
Ten riders staged
for the "Works
Performance"/"Barnett" Modern 250 main. This class for machines
from 1979 or earlier with no water cooling, off the line Jeff Lessley
put his
Bultaco up front followed by the Yamaha of Marc Lyons and Joe Meyer.
Malcolm
Roe on a very unusual machine (a class A speedway frame with a Bultaco
engine)
was away in fourth. Then on the third lap of six Lessley's hand shot
skyward
indicating a problem. Lyons
a bike
and a half back who was hounding Lessley shot to the lead. This in turn
moved
the entire field up one spot. At the front Lyons
was gone as he put in his best lap at 20.12/100 seconds picking up the
victory
by over nine bike lengths over Meyer, with Jason Lessley moving to
third on the
last lap over Roe.
Remember the
name Stevie Bonsey, if all goes according to
plan great things will come from this fifteen year old young man.
"K.L.H.
Racing's" Bonsey kicked things off in the "Tuff
Plates"/"Motion Pro" Open Amateur "A" main where he
made short work of Garrett Slate, Patrick McNamara, and Andy Wood.
Stevie in a
class by himself was ready for the "Digger Helm Pro 600" main. The
field of fourteen had qualified through three heat races and a semi.
Bonsey
shot to the lead but on the first trip down the back shoot Ron Wood's
Racing
Alex Wood got squeezed out and went down hard bringing out the red
flag. Then
just after the red flag in turn one two more riders collided, with
Classic 500
main winner Joel Kath getting the worst of it. On the restart Bonsey
picked up
where he left off up front. Donnie Harrell jumped in behind in second
followed
by Don Howard, Joe Hernandez Jr. and David Brown. Lap two saw Bonsey
put in his
fastest lap of 18.01/100 seconds as he inched away from Harrell. On lap
three
Howard bobbled between turns three and four giving the front two a gap.
At the
half way point of this fifteen lapper Bonsey had a two second gap over
Harrell.
By lap ten Bonsey was into lappers but had little problem getting
around them.
Brown would challenge for the fourth spot but came up short; however he
would
leave with the points lead by virtue of Bonsey only riding two rounds
of the
series. After the race Bonsey attributed his new found speed to "K.L.H.
and the C&J framed bike". "If the tracks smooth it works so good,
also I've been doing a lot of trail riding at Clear Creek. I got a
little tired
at the end but I'm happy."
