In 1935, Jerry Unser moved his family to from Colorado to Albuquerque and immediately put down roots with a garage located right on Route 66, from which he and his four sons campaigned circle-track cars around the Southwest, launched numerous successful assaults on Pikes Peak, and clinched multiple Indianapolis 500 wins. This weekend, the Unser racing presence in Albuquerque will come to a close when the Unser Racing Museum closes in preparation of the transfer of all of its assets to the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska. "The Smith family had known the Unsers for over 40 years and had approached them about making their museum the centerpiece of the museum in Lincoln," Brown said. Speedway Museum recently added 90,000 square feet of display space that will accommodate the Unser Museum's 40-plus cars, 1,000 trophies, artwork, championship rings, silver and crystal, helmets, driver's suits, and other display material.

My wife and I had the good fortune to take a month long motor trip around the USA. Among the many stops at historic houses, art and history museums, national monuments and presidential homes, were the last of the major motorcycle museums I had not visited. I meet Dennis Kanegae at the new Haas Museum and spent a very enjoyable morning there. It worth your time. I had often wondered about Wheels Through Time as I’m not a big H-D fan. Very impressive collection and the casual style works. It is also near the Biltmore Estate, which is is the largest privately owned house in the United States. 35 bedrooms, 65 fireplaces, and 43 bathrooms.
The AMA Hall of Fame has a lot historical competition machines on display and the Sturgis Museum was a wecome surprise when we realized we were at Mount Rushmore and Sturgis was just down the road on our way home.
Probably the best automotive museum in the country is the Revs Institute in Naples, Florida. I love race cars and this museum has the Briggs Cunningham cars and the Collier collection which has the largest collection of Porsche race cars in the country. Also a Mercedes  W154 and other F1 cars. It’s to bad its so far away from the main stream as you really have to want to go there. We also stopped at the Petroleum Museum in Midland, Texas to see the Chaparral cars. Neat place. Next year we hope to do the Northeast again and visit the museums in New York and Maine that we haven't seen.    dennis vft
